When Gail and Bob Boggan moved to Hardin County, they began looking for a venue for their talents. When the couple found the opportunity to own Uptown Restaurant, 390 Main Street, Savannah, they both felt it was what they should be doing. “It’s a California Bistro style restaurant, with interesting ingredients and fresh, healthy food,” said Gail. “We want to offer a ‘big city’ restaurant in Savannah.”
Gail has been involved in food service all her life and feels right at home in the kitchen. Although this is her first time to own a restaurant, she has been in charge of two other restaurants-one in Michigan and the other in California. “My wife is extremely talented. We’ve been married for 21 years, and I’ve always been spoiled with delicious food,” said Bob.
The restaurant is open for breakfast Monday through Friday, with freshly baked scones, pastries and Starbucks coffees. Open for lunch, Monday through Friday, and supper, Monday through Saturday, the menu selection is prepared from scratch, including sandwiches, soups, steaks, fresh seafood flown in overnight from Hawaii, desserts and more. For example, the specials have been dishes such as Tasmanian salmon and Wahoo, two different fish dishes. Another specialty is lamb chops. Recipes always include freshly prepared dressings and sauces. The restaurant has a full bar, with a variety of wines, beer and alcohol available.
The historical building that houses the restaurant is in the center of Main Street. It has been decorated and has the extra amenity of an outside eating deck. “We have put pole heaters on the deck, to extend the time people can eat outside,” said Gail. Live music is played on the deck on some evenings. Groups who would like to apply to play should contact Gail at the restaurant. “We want it to continue to be a place where friends gather to talk, buisness deals can be made and people can celebrate special events,” said Bob.
Gail and Bob were both raised in Mississippi, but Bob remembers doing some waterskiing on Pickwick Lake as a kid. The couple has lived in several locations, most recently back in Mississippi, where Bob worked in the aerospace business at Eaton Corporation. Previously Bob was a pilot in the United State Marine Corps. And Gail has worked as a hairdresser and in real estate. As the couple researched the internet for a place to retire, their search took them to Hardin County. On their first visit, they bought land near Olive Hill; then they bought a cabin on the Tennessee River. Now they are in the process of buiding a barn/home on their property in Olive Hill.
“Having my own restaurant is my lifelong passion. I love it,” said Gail. “We are so pleased. It is everything we’d hoped it would be,” said Bob. For more information call Uptown at 926-1911.
